February 15, 2010
lunch: 1 red apple (delicious!! so tasty!! better than candy all day long!!)
3 rice cakes with humus
dinner: to be determined...
Maybe I can work in a workout tonight...dentist appt at 5:10 so may get home in time to get out before full dark...to be determined as well...
OK, so the workout idea was a pie in the sky...next week we'll work on that. For now, two good days in. That's all it is one day plus one day plus one day...one day at a time for many days and there you go!
Dinner: yogurt parfait (vanilla yogurt, frozen (thawed) cherries, dash of go-lean crunch as "granola" stand in. 1 1/2 pc of whole wheat toast with butter, veggie scramble w/ egg beaters, onions, asparagus, zucchini, apple and tomato...dash of olive oil to make it all cook up. Yummy. And full. Looks like I am short some fruits and veggies...need to prioritize getting more of these into the diet. Surprisingly little in terms of cravings today...would have thought I'd be yearning for those sweets by day 2...we'll see what tomorrow brings.
If I can make it to Friday with all good days this week I will reward myself with a Starbucks breakfast...medium hot chocolate made with skim milk, no whipped. Pass on the pastry that I usually get...the pastry of choice these days is a blueberrry scone...yum. The scone really has no redeeming value whatsoever. If I could go the rest of my life without eating one (or anything like it) I would surely be better off. The drink, well, its not really that bad for you when you consider I'm supposed to be drinking the milk anyway...the little bit of chocolate in the drink it not adding a whole lot over just a warm skim milk. Milk just has a lot of calories...not much you can do about that if you are supposed to be getting the dairy in somehow. It comes with a price no matter what the form. Something to look forward to over the daily dose of oatmeal.

February 14, 2012
lunch: chicken breast, some terriaki sauce, spicy green beans. Feel quite full, but would eat the fortune cookie if I did not stop myself...it is sooo weird that my body and mind both seem to want to continue eating even after I am full. It makes no sense. I know the science behind it is that our bodies were trained in the earliest days of man to get and hold on to all the fat they could because we might need it...biology has not caught up to the world as we live it. And we live it wrongly too often. I think that I will NOT eat this fortune cookie, I will throw it away, and I will win this particular battle with nature.
Now on to dinner... already I am trying to think what we can eat that will be low points for the grownups, healthy and filling for the kids, easy to fix, and simple to clean up after...is that too much to ask? For a working mom with three kids, two dogs, a house, a husband who has been out of town for 5 days ... does not seem like it should be so hard!
A good rule of thumb, and one I lived by when I was part-time, was no food at the office after 4:00. None. No snacks, no candy, no soda...if you made it until 4:00, you can make it until dinner. If you are not hungry by now, its because you simply are not hungry. No hungry, no eat. Why is it not that simple? That should be my mantra...no hungry, no eat. No hungry, no eat. What's that reggae song? No something, no cry...no something no cry...what the hell were the words to that song? This is going to drive me crazy...
No woman, no cry.
Dinner: tilapia fillet dipped in eggbeaters then Italian breadcrumb/asiago cheese mixture with a dab of BBQ sauce on top. Cabbage with balsamic vinegar. Dark red kidney beans. 1/3 glass of red wine. Thought I was in the mood for the wine so I opened a bottle...not so much. Pretty good day.
Could not seem to work exercise in...that will have to come as the weather heats up and the sun in out more in the morning. The morning is the best time for me to be working out since I hate "fake" exercise (treadmill, elliptical, etc.) I prefer to be able to get outdoors and do things...we'll see if I can focus on losing some lbs first and then I'll add in the exercise...for a triathlon this summer I need to lose some weight before I start trying to run on this body!!!

January 10, 2010
In 2007 I did my first triathlon. I started training in February and did the triathlon in August. It was a sprint tri and it was awesome. I had such a sense of accomplishment at the end that I cried-and I am not a cryer. It was great. I especially loved the swimming.
When I started my training, I could barely make it one length of the pool. I mean, I was not going to drown or anything, but I did not know how to breathe correctly and I was WAY out of shape. I took a "triathlon and lap swimming conditioning" class and made my way through about a million laps. The first session was 10 weeks and at the end of it I could actually do most of the stuff the instructor asked us to , but still did not have the breathing down. In the last class I went to we were supposed to swim for 30 minutes straight as slowly as we needed to. I took many breaks. Somewhere during the second session I figured out how to breathe-this is not as easy as they would have you believe). I was swimming at least 3 times a week, twice in a masters level group (the aforementioned class) and it still took me over 3 months to figure it out. But once I did it was like a whole new world opened up.
I did the tri and while my time was not competative, I felt a real sense of accomplishment. I did the swim with no issues and the bike was fun. Being short and not really liking to run, that part was slow as molassas, but what can you ? I finished and fell in love with the whole thing.
Since that August day (can it really have been 2 1/1 years ago?) I have done one indoor tri and one more outdoor tri. I also had a baby-my little guy is getting ready to turn one and its time for me to refocus. While I am just as (if not more) out of shape now than I was back three years ago when I first started training I at least have an idea of what it takes to get through a tri-both just to "do it" (August 2009 tri being an example) and to do it right (August 2007, for example). A tri when you are not prepared is no fun at all.
Anyway, that's just a quick summary of where I am and where I am going. I want to do a couple of tris this summer and actually feel good about them. In which case, I need to get off my can and start training. Maybe this blog will help keep me motivated. Maybe its just a waste of time. We'll see.
